Why Am I Tired… All The Time?

Have you seen this quote before?

Tired, Tired all the time, Powerhouse Chiropractic, Vancouver Chiropractor, Olympic Village, False Creek, Mount Pleasant

How did we get this way? We aren’t getting enough sleep, or we aren’t getting enough good quality sleep.

We go to bed exhausted, sleep for 6-8 hours, and still wake up TIRED.

How can that be?

Research shows relatively moderate sleep restrictions (6 hours or less per night) can seriously impair neuro-behavioural functions in healthy adults.

You can read more about this in our blog Top 10 Ways to Improve Sleep Naturally.

Your Vancouver Chiropractors at The Powerhouse note the negative consequences of not getting enough sleep and feeling tired are:

  • Less productivity at work and home
  • Feeling stressed out and anxious, which leads to poor and impulsive decision making
  • Paying less attention, which can be dangerous while chopping veggies or driving
  • Less likely to play with your kids or do the hobbies you enjoy
  • Feeling isolated, and more likely to bail on plans with friends and family
  • Disruption of hormone function which keeps you feeling tired
“But I am getting enough sleep! What else is making me feel so tired?”

Great question! Let’s dive in…

Are you Eating By Design?

Your body needs to be fueled with nourishing foods like vegetables, protein, and good quality fats. If you’re feeling sluggish throughout the day, try to record how you are feeling after you eat.

Did that heavy, processed meal put you in a “food coma”? Write that down.

How was your energy when you chose a fresh, colourful garden salad with roasted chicken? Writing down how you feel positively reinforces healthy food choices.

Giving your body the best foods to keep you moving makes you feel energized.

Food is fuel; it should speed you up, not slow you down.

What you eat has a big impact on hormone function. When your hormones are outta-whack, it affects your sleep. You can learn how to balance your hormones in this Life By Design podcast. It also includes a link to download the Eat By Design manual.

Pro tip: Eat 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up; this will help you feel energized and ready for the day.

Are you Moving By Design?

What kind of job do you have?

Is it one where you’re on your feet, being physical? Or do you have a desk job, with a long commute?

How many times per week do you get outside for a walk or hike?

Is your physical activity pre-booked in your calendar?

Working out for an hour at the gym even 5 times a week is only about 3{831152ed6c31b2d70bf685057a8ccfa0a5d9aec09f3ef830c770c48681358d83} of your week. If that’s the only activity you’re getting, that’s not enough.

We’re built to move!

When our ancestors had access to an abundance of good foods, they spent their days walking great distances to collect it.

When we nourish our bodies and get lots of physical activity, our bodies respond well to this healthy way of life.

Our ancestors’ health decayed during harsh winter months when food was scarce and movements restricted. Surviving meant reducing energy levels during the winter.

In our modern day-to-day, it’s easy to see how restrictive dieting and sitting for hours could be mistaken for the harsh winters of our ancestors!

Here are some simple ways to get more active in Vancouver:

  • Train at the gym (we recommend these guys)
  • Dragon boat down False Creek from Olympic Village
  • Walk along Vancouver’s seawall or through the North Van forests
  • Swim at Kits pool, Third beach or in Buntzen Lake
  • Ski or snowboard down Cypress Mountain

In Vancouver, there’s almost no excuse not to be getting adequate movement all year round!

Pro tip: A fun (and sometimes overwhelming) way to start thinking about the future can be with a 25-year vision. Start by creating a list of things you want to achieve in the next 25 years. Once you have this vision, break it down into what you can do this year to make that happen. Once you know your 25-year vision and 1-year goals, then create a 90-day plan to begin achieving them.

You will probably be surprised by what you can do in 90 days!

  • Train for the Vancouver Sun Run
  • Plant a balcony vegetable garden
  • Start an online business
  • Go scuba diving
  • Plan a road trip across the country
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen
  • Start writing a novel
  • Apply for Chiropractic college
